Team

Cenozoic Resources is owned and operated by Kayla Patterson. Our technical work is performed by two staff scientists: a nuclear logging physicist with five decades in borehole geophysics and 30 years of vadose zone characterization, and a licensed geologist with a decade of borehole geophysics at DOE sites.

Kayla A. Patterson

Owner, Chief Executive Officer, and Chief Financial Officer

Kayla Patterson owns and operates Cenozoic Resources. She directs its executive functions, including business development, budgeting and financial planning, contract performance, and vendor and client accounts. She has more than 15 years of experience in organizational oversight, regulatory compliance, and high-volume case management in Washington State public service, including supervising staff and a caseload of more than 100 active cases.

Education: B.A., Psychology (minor in Law and Justice), Central Washington University; A.A., Columbia Basin College

James D. Patterson, L.G.

President and Principal Geologist

James Patterson leads technical projects, field operations, and systems engineering at Cenozoic Resources, and serves as Corporate Radiation Safety Officer. He has a decade of experience in borehole geophysics and vadose zone characterization at DOE sites, within a 20-year career in geology, hydrogeology, and geotechnical and analytical laboratory management.

  • Directed a research and development team building nuclear geophysical logging equipment, and reviewed logging systems, calibration certificates, and log data reports for QA/QC
  • Prepared neutron moisture and drywell monitoring log data reports for DOE tank farm characterization; logging methods include spectral and gross gamma, neutron moisture, gyroscopic deviation, acoustic, resistivity, caliper, and optical televiewer
  • Managed a geotechnical laboratory running more than 20 accredited test methods with up to 35 staff, and served as RSO under a Washington State radioactive materials license
  • As a U.S. Geological Survey hydrologist, developed the geologic framework for a regional groundwater model of the East Pasco Basin

Education and licenses: M.S. and B.S., Geology, Central Washington University; Washington Licensed Geologist No. 3274; RSO training, Radiological Worker II, 40-hour HAZWOPER. Author of 12 publications and presentations, including USGS Scientific Investigations Report 2016-5026 and a 2008 article in Nature Geoscience.

Dr. Russel R. Randall

Chief Scientist

Russel Randall is a nuclear logging physicist with five decades in borehole geophysics, including 30 years of vadose zone characterization at DOE sites. He has designed, calibrated, and characterized logging instruments for the petroleum industry and for DOE vadose zone monitoring. He founded Three Rivers Scientific in 1995 and developed the slim-hole spectral gamma, neutron moisture, and temperature tools that Cenozoic Resources acquired in 2025 and now operates at DOE sites. Three Rivers Scientific continues as an independent firm.

  • Led development of a pulsed neutron logging tool from concept to commercial use in 18 months, and directed a neutron generator manufacturing and research facility
  • Directed a theoretical research department characterizing nuclear, resistivity, sonic, and production logging instruments, and led development of a gamma-gamma density measurement-while-drilling tool
  • Developed and calibrated neutron moisture logging instrumentation for DOE vadose zone monitoring, co-developed the MCNP models used to calibrate the logs, and co-authored the 1996 calibration in the Hanford moisture models
  • 13 patents in logging instrumentation; 20 technical documents for DOE site contractors; 28 industry and university papers

Education and affiliations: Ph.D. and M.S., Physics, Kansas State University; B.A., Physics, Kansas State Teachers College. American Physical Society, Society of Petroleum Engineers, Society of Petrophysicists and Well Log Analysts, Sigma Pi Sigma; DOE Gold Award (team member); Dresser Industries Creativity Award.
